American Standard Version
And one of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together, and knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, What commandment is the first of all?

Amplified® Bible
Then one of the scribes came up and listened to them disputing with one another, and, noticing that Jesus answered them fitly {and} admirably, he asked Him, Which commandment is first {and} most important of all [in its nature]?

Darby English Version
And one of the scribes who had come up, and had heard them reasoning together, perceiving that he had answered them well, demanded of him, Which is [the] first commandment of all?

International Standard Version
Then one of the scribes came near and heard them arguing with one another. He saw how well Jesus answered them, so he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of them all?"

King James Version
And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

Young's Literal Translation
And one of the scribes having come near, having heard them disputing, knowing that he answered them well, questioned him, `Which is the first command of all?'
