Romans 15:4 - Forerunner Commentary

Romans 15:4

2 ^aLet each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to¹ edification.

3 ^aFor even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, ^b“The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.”

4 For ^awhatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the¹ patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

5 ^aNow may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus,

6 that you may ^awith one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Glorify God Together

7 Therefore ^areceive one another, just ^bas Christ also received us, to the glory of God.

8 Now I say that ^aJesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, ^bto confirm the promises made to the fathers,

Romans 15:4-6

This afternoon, I want to start in Romans chapter 15, verses 4 through 6. In these verses, Paul is reminding us how important it is to go back into the Scriptures and review the lives of men recorded to help us today as we strive to live our lives in a godly manner.

Paul is telling us here that you can go back into the Old Testament, and there are rich sources of lessons to be learned. And of course for us today, the New Testament as well. These lessons are put in here for us to learn and to grow that we may have a closer relationship with God. They help us to know how God thinks, where His heart is, what His character is. And through the Scriptures, it gives us hope.
