The book of Ecclesiastes contains a phrase that appears quite often: under the sun. This phrase means (paraphrased in modern English) "apart from God." God is above, not under, the sun; He is in heaven. Under the sun means "below heaven," so what Solomon reasons and concludes is through carnal rationalism. He is not sayingand God is not sayingthat this is entirely bad, but under the sun essentially excludes God from the thought process.
