The purpose of the manifestation of the works of God in Christ—the miracles, the feeding of 5,000, of 4,000, the healing of people, restoring sight, giving people hearing—were all done by God to produce faith so that we would believe. If God did these things for all of those people, would He not do the same for us? God is shaping and molding events in our lives so that our faith is continually strengthened. God wants us to trust Him and His Word and to respond in faith.

Did any group of people other than the Israelites coming out of Egypt ever see so many miracles? Perhaps the apostles who witnessed all of Jesus' miracles saw more. Nevertheless, the Israelites failed to reach the Promised Land, God's rest at the time, because they did not have any faith. Miracles produce faith only for a short period of time. They are not an effective means of producing faith, which why God is not overly concerned about them. What He is concerned about is diligence, discipline, patience, steadfast endurance. Now there is a real miracle: changing human nature to go resolutely in the right direction!
